The Catawba Classic Lacrosse Tournament will draw 50 youth teams from six states to the fields off Dave Lyle Boulevard. This is the first year Links of London Fort Mill Lacrosse Club has hosted the tournament, which kicks off at 8:30 a.m. Links of London Gingerbread Man with a traditional Catawba Indian dance. "Because lacrosse was originally a Native American sport, we thought it would be great to combine the tradition of lacrosse with the tradition of the dance," said Tom Salerno, president of the Fort Mill Lacrosse Club. Teams will compete Saturday and resume play at 8 a.m. Sunday. The Fort Mill Lacrosse Club, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting youth and high school lacrosse programs in Fort Mill, is hosting the tournament as a fundraiser. Teams paid between $600 and $900 for registration, depending on their Links of London Bee Charm divisions. The club supports Fort Mill High School's lacrosse team -- the only high school lacrosse team in York County. Coach Jim Van Blarcom has been watching some of his players from Fort Mill High's team practice for the tournament. "It's a young team right now for the most part," Van Blarcom said. "We're going to be playing against some of these elite teams. It'll be pretty interesting." Van Blarcom isn't allowed to coach Fort Mill High's team in the tournament because of regulations that prohibit coaches from preparing teams for games that require full equipment Links of London Snowflake Charms June 1 and July 25. Because the Catawba Classic requires full equipment, some players from Fort Mill High's team will play as a club instead, under the leadership of a player's dad. The team will face the Georgia Vipers and the Charlotte Tomahawks on Saturday, Van Blarcom said. "
